LATEST - Nancy Germer's Photography
Here's one of my latest photographs from Florida..
This is a black bellied Plover, but in it's winter coat...that's why no black belly.
Isn't it interesting how birds change their coats for breeding...in late winter/spring!!

Raptors and Autumn seem to go together.....
This Saturday, I visited the Ohio Bird Sanctuary during the Fall Festival. I went last year too.
Rare is the opportunity to shoot images of raptor up really close and personal, in the woods, sitting on cool stumps and things, with their tethering showing as little as possible. A shoot designed JUST FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS, really!!! Well, it's not, but then...IT TURNS OUT TO BE! Tons of photographers usually swarm the place. Seems they have this event in the Spring too, but I've never been that time of year.
Anyhow..here is one of my favorite shots from this year's shooting, for me!!

Unified Color HDR Express – First Look
Okay, I admit it, this is not my article. It comes from my first favorite photography forum, Digital Photography School! It's not REALLY an accredited school, mind you. But it is a huge forum with tons of stockpiled articles for shooting info on just about anything!!!
Go there, join, and check it out!! Digital Photography School
I do a significant amount of HDR work. My software of choice is Photomatix. See about this software.
However, I came upon this software, inexpensive with an easy to use interface. So, wanted to share this with folks new to HDR. There is more to it than just using the software, however. Taking the bracketed exposures correctly is where it starts..
Anyhow...got to thinking about HDR yesterday, after someone didn't especially care for a photo I posted of an old cement truck... Warned me about the HOLE of HDR that once in you can't get out of..
Hey folks, my comment is that HDR is totally a matter of personal taste. If you like it, then great.
Not ALL photography has to look like the scent you saw....why? Because it's too much fun to manipulate images other ways!!! I'm NOT a photojournalist. I consider myself at artist, working with all the tools I can find to make a terrific image...well...at least one I personally think is great! :))
So anyway, here's the info from DPP about this easy to learn HDR program... Have FUN!!!!!!!

Making Your Photos into Standouts!!
Well,,, here's to opening a can of worms!!
I am aware that some photographers are way more purist than I... feeling that photos should LOOK, darn it, like what you saw when you took the shot!
Actually, I think that is fine if you are a photojournalist, and reporting through photos...Otherwise, to me, messing with photos is fun, becomes inspiring, and artsy!
Using photoshop to get the artistic effect I want...is like working in the dark room to develop film negatives into pictures the way you want them to turn out. It's just that most folks had no experience with the film development process, and didn't know how much 'monkeying around" was being done then...
Photoshop for me is an artistic tool. It helps me move my photos to another level, hopefully a better one..and more of an art than just a technical skill sharpening and adding contrast.
For those that explore there, Photoshop is another idea of expertise for photographers to learn...and experience!
Seeing creatively is, of course, another aspect of the artistic side of photography. Even the purists would probably agree that this is a necessary and way important ability. Some have it, some develop it, but it's needed!!
All in the name of fun with photography, I'm on board with anyone who wants to make there photos stand out!!
Here is an article I read today. It's about "How to Make Photos Stand Out From the Crowd".
The ways suggested don't involve Photoshop at all, but techniques to use while shooting...
I figure all ends of the photographic process to shooting to printing, could benefit from efforts to make our Photos STANDOUTS!! Oh...and what's a standout? Well, to me, it's a photograph that makes you stop, look and think about it more than 10 seconds, compared to the rest!!! :))
Does this one do it for ya?
Click here for a look at the article and some outstanding photos!!

New to Bird Photography?
No place better to try your hand at it than in a spot where there will be LOTS of birds to shoot, and LOTS of photographers to help you!!!
One of the primary skills of bird photography involves PATIENCE!! You gotta wait til the birds come, or until they DO something cool!! It is not a quality that I come by naturally. I have developed my patience in general over the years while teaching, but waiting around for birds, is something I don't really enjoy..but must do!!!!!
Considering the above info, at the link there is a GREAT photo opportunity to shoot birds with photogs and birders:
The 9th Annual Birding Festival in Galveston Island, Texas, April 7-10!
For many reading this blog, the thought goes..oh gosh, so far away!! Yep, it is somewhat. Flying with large amounts of camera gear can be done! (topic for another day) But if you wanna shoot bird pics, ya gotta go to where the birds are!!!!!!! This is a prime op!!
Find all the info on this here!

Florida Sunsets are BEAUTIFUL!!!
Several photos have I now posted of Florida sunset time! All sorts of folks come to watch them...Sailboats float around awaiting the arrival.
It was about 5:30pm each day I was in FL, that we tried to be somewhere for sunset!!

Using a Flash in Daylight Outside? Oh Yeah!
I've had several folks ask me why I'm using a flash outdoors! Hey, there is plenty of light, right?
Yeah...plenty too much!! Too much sunlight casts mottled light all over the place and you don't want it on your subject!
The best light outside is probably an overcast day! (Unless you are shooting pics of birds in flight)
For portraits, your objective is to CONTROL how the light, where and how much, hits your subject.
Using a light, off camera, and with an umbrella for more diffusion, is a great choice!
See the following video for a great demo of this!! Sorry about the advertising..
Also, this is from Video Corner at http://www.photographycorner.com/

They have a monthly show, different members show each month.
My turn with about 5 others (I think) is on Saturday night 6-9pm April 9th!!
PLEASE CONSIDER THIS YOUR INVITATION!!!!!! HOPE YOU CAN ATTEND!
There is a parking lot across from Arnold's on Eighth St, just past Arnold's. Lots of cars will be parking there.
The photo show is upstairs. There is a bar and restaurant downstairs, so you may want to come to eat first.
THERE'S ONE OTHER THING....
I have asked musician, songwriter, composer, George Anderson, (for TV, film, documentaries, etc.) to come play guitar a bit during the
show. He's very good! And doing it for me while in Cincinnati. He's from New York.
P.S. I realize some of you are out of town and won't be able to attend, but..... I just wanted you to know my news:)
THIRD NEWS ITEM:

LAST NEWS ITEM: (whew)
I have been asked to be the House Scribe ( photographing events for their blog) and Assistant Organizer for a relatively new MeetUp Group called SMUG- Cincinnati Area SmugMug users. Some may recognize SmugMug as the host organization for my photo website. It's all about photography, meeting others with like interests, learning and having fun.
Here's addy for that group.. Join us if you'd like! You don't have to have a Smugmug site to be a member...
OKAY..I think that's it for now!!

Florida Trip
Just wanted to write a quick note that I just returned recently from a 10 day trip to Florida. I mainly visited the area on the west coast, near Ft. Myers. One of my cousins, of three who live in Florida, was my driver, gear sherpa and tour guide!!! He was great! Took me to many well known spots to take photos. I was mainly looking for shots of birds, but ended up taking all kinds of shots from sunsets to shots of cousin's families.
All in all it was a great time...somewhat tired by the end of the trip!! But..came home with over 3000 pics to evaluate for keeping...then comes the selecting the best and processing!! Oh gad!!
Anyhow...so far I have 8 posted at the link...in my LATEST album on my SmugMug site.....
I'm also ready to go back to that SUNNY, WARM 85 degree weather I was experiencing!!!

Wonderful World of Blogging!!
Hi ya folks!
I've just started my blog about my photography, or, photography in general.
Please feel free to take a look, comment, or just enjoy the pictures over at my website on Smugmug. Click here to see: Nancy's Photography
On my blog, you will see various links to information I have found valuable in my search for knowledge about photography. I suppose one reason why my case is unique, is that the type of photos you see on my site, have been accomplished in less than three years of personal study. I have never gone to an accredited photography school. I decided to take up photography when I retired from school teaching, because it was always something I wanted to do, but never had time to do. And I pursued it with vigor!!
YOU CAN TOO!
And so..here is your first link...it's where I've found lots of information, help, guidance, and also friendships right here in my city.. Please take a look! Find out via search at the site, whether there is a Meetup Group about Photography in your town!
I can not stress enough that finding a group of folks: who enjoy the same hobby as you, who are willing to share their knowledge, who may be beginners like you, or who just plain ole want to socialize with photography as the shared interest, is SOOOOOOOO important, helpful and well, FUN!!!!!!!!
Go find your Meet-up Group NOW!!
Nancy
